Collegium Novum

The description was prepared by the Disability Support Service.

The Collegium Novum is the historic, main, most recognisable building of the Jagiellonian University located at 24 Gołębia Street, surrounded by the Planty.

The two-storey edifice was built on a nearly square plan with two small internal courtyards. The building faces Floriana Straszewskiego Street but is separated from it by the Planty park, which also directly surrounds the building on the right (when facing the main entrance). From this perspective, on the left is Gołębia Street, which leads towards the buildings of the Jagiellonian University's Faculty of Polish Studies. From the rear, the plot of land on which Collegium Novum was built is bounded by Jagiellońska Street.

On the square in front of the main entrance to the Collegium Novum grows a Liberty Oak planted in 1919 on the anniversary of Poland's independence.

The Collegium Novum building was commissioned in 1887 and was built in the neo-Gothic style in force at the time. The monumental façade is therefore characterised by red brick, decorative elements in the form of the shields of arms of the founders of the university, sharp arches in the portico and high windows above.

This expansive building has a representative function, being the seat of the University authorities: the Rector, the Vice-Rectors, and the central administration. It hosts participants of conferences, symposia, academic ceremonies, concerts - scientific and cultural events, not only on a local national, but also on an international level.

Main entrance (not accessible for wheelchair users)

The main entrance is located on the side of Floriana Straszewskiego Street, reached from the square within the Planty. A stone staircase (5 steps) leads to the portico part, slightly protruding from the façade. There are five pointed-arch portals at the front, with two additional portals on the sides. Each portal can be closed with a metal gate. Usually, only one gate (the second one from the left, when facing the building) is open. After entering it, we proceed to the portico (a kind of porch with pillars or arches preceding the entrance). After walking about 4 metres, we reach the entrance door. In front of them are large doormats, further on a stone threshold. The entrance door is high double-leafed (you enter through one of the leaves with a handle). The door has to be opened manually; it is quite heavy, and the handle is higher than standard, at a height of about 130 cm. After passing through the door, we find ourselves in the main lobby area on the ground floor of the building.

Entrance from Gołębia Street (for wheelchair users)

The entrance to the building from Gołębia Street is accessible from ground level. A street paved with moulded stone leads to it from the Planty. From the corner of the front wall of the building, one has to proceed about 30 metres along Gołębia Street; after covering this distance, opposite the building of the Collegium Minus, one reaches a massive wooden double door with a large handle at a height of 130 cm. On the door in the middle of the wing with the handle, at a height of about 110 cm, there is a video intercom with a button connecting to the gatehouse. Once connected, the door opens automatically. We then enter the vestibule in front of the courtyard, move further ahead, reach a large wooden door usually open, and pass through it into the corridor on the ground floor of the Collegium Novum. In front of us, we have a wooden double door leading into the courtyard. The button that opens this door is on the wall to the right of the door; at a height of about 90 cm, it is a white switch - unmarked. When the door opens automatically, we enter one of the inner courtyards, where a lift is located to the right of the entrance, with a vestibule built-in with glass and a canopy.

When we travel from the lift in the opposite direction, the automatic doors open by pressing the button signed 'door opening'. These buttons are located in two places:

  • the first, to the door from the courtyard, is on the wall to the right of the door at a height of approximately 80 cm,
  • to the next door - at the exit to Dovecote Street: approx. 1.5 m in front of the door, on the wall on the left, at a height of approx. 100 cm.

Entrance from Jagiellońska Street

This entrance serves as an emergency exit and is usually closed on a daily basis. On the plan of the building, it is located on the back wall of the building, exactly opposite the main entrance. From the street, it has a sign with the address of 19 Jagiellońska St. A staircase (5 steps) leads to it from Jagiellońska Street. Jagiellońska Street, like Gołębia, is also paved with moulded coloured stone. From the Planty side, three stone stairs lead to Jagiellońska Street.

There are two small inner courtyards in the Collegium Novum building. They are rectangular in shape. On the plan of the building, the courtyards are arranged to the left and right of the main entrance and the central staircase. The one on the right is only accessible from inside the building. The one on the left, equipped with a lift, is also accessible from Gołębia Street (wheelchair access).

To enter the courtyards from inside the building, head straight from the main entrance; when you reach the elevated part of the corridor, climb five steps up, then seven steps down, continue straight and halfway down this lowered passage between corridors, past the cloakroom, turn to the large wooden door on the left or right of the passage.

The entrance to the courtyard from Gołębia Street is described in the previous section.

Apart from the location of a lift in the space of one of them, and thus taking over the function of an entrance to the building for wheelchair users, the courtyards are of little use. They are small, and no ceremonies are held in them. Rather, they only have an aesthetic function, building up the space behind the windows of the corridors leading around the individual floors.

The building has three floors above ground and one underground (basement).

Each floor can be accessed by stairs or lifts. We can visualise the plan of each floor as a square with a representative, monumental staircase with a stone openwork balustrade in the central point, two internal courtyards on two sides of the stairs (from the ground floor, they are accessed by doors diverging from the central corridor to the left and right, from the upper floors we can see them from the windows). A corridor leading around each floor, built on a roughly square plan, takes us in turn to the various rooms and halls.

There is one lift in the building. It serves all levels from minus 1 to 2. The button marked P indicates the ground floor, and D indicates the courtyard level. The lift opens in two directions:

  • on each floor towards the interior of the building,; exit to the corridor,
  • at courtyard level in the opposite direction; exit into courtyard space.

The lift is equipped with voice announcements in Polish. It has no handrails or mirror. The panel is located closer to the door opening into the interior of the building; when entering the lift from the courtyard, it is on the left-hand side. The buttons are located vertically from the number 2 at the top, in sequence: 1, P, D, minus 1. The lowest button is the alarm bell. On two of its sides are buttons that open the door to one side and the other side. The buttons are not described in Braille but are marked with a large convex digit or letter symbol that can be felt by touch.

  • To reach the lift from the main entrance, enter the main hall, cross the first level straight ahead, then climb the five stone stairs to the upper level of the corridor; here, turn left. The lift is on the wall on the right, after walking about 5 metres. The panel to summon the lift is on the left at a height of about 100 cm.
  • To reach the lift from the entrance from Gołębia Street (wheelchair-accessible route, no architectural barriers), enter the vestibule in front of the courtyard after the entrance door is opened by the porter, then continue straight ahead through the large wooden door, which is usually open, go into the corridor and continue straight ahead into the courtyard through the wooden double doors with a button that opens them automatically, located on the right. After entering through these doors, a lift is located on the right side of the courtyard. On the courtyard side, the lift entrance is preceded by a glazed and covered vestibule. The panel invoking the lift is then located on the right side at a height of approximately 100 cm.

The porterhouse room is located on the ground floor. It is located just behind the main entrance, on the left-hand side, behind the glass window. Access to the porterhouse is not available for wheelchair users entering from Golebia Street (stairs). The telephone number for the Collegium Novum porterhouse is 12 663 11 00.

A cloakroom (staffed) is located on the ground floor of the Collegium Novum. To reach it from the main entrance, enter the main hall, go through the first level of it straight ahead, then climb five stone stairs to the upper level of the corridor, then go down the stone stairs again (7 steps). The cloakroom is located on the wall to the right. It is a window with a countertop at a height of about 100 cm; the staff accepts outerwear and issues tokens with numbers.

On the opposite side of the cloakroom is an ATM. Access to the cloakroom is somewhat difficult from a wheelchair perspective. To get to the cloakroom from the entrance from Gołębia Street, you have to cross a courtyard with a lift. So, after the porter has opened the entrance door, enter the vestibule in front of the courtyard, then continue straight ahead, go through the large wooden door that is usually open into the corridor and continue straight ahead into the courtyard through another wooden double door with a button that opens it automatically, located on the right. In the courtyard, continue straight ahead to the next door, which will take you back inside the building to a central corridor, cutting through the Collegium Novum on the ground floor through the middle, where the cloakroom is located. To access the other levels of the building from there, return to the courtyard and use the lift.

The description of level 0 will be led from the main entrance. There are variations in levels within the ground floor. On the ground floor, rooms numbered from 1 (gatehouse) to 21 are located. They are arranged in a roughly square plan, the numbering increasing from the left. In our description, we will also move according to this numbering. So, from the main entrance, we will head left along the corridor surrounding the staircase and inner courtyards, circle around and return to our starting point.

After entering through the main door, we find ourselves in the first vestibule, where the numbering of the rooms located on the ground floor begins and ends. Standing with our backs to the entrance door, after crossing the threshold, we have the gatehouse window on our left. On the right is a wooden hand-operated door to room 21, the seat of the Jagiellonian University Alumni Association. The entrance to the room is preceded by a stone threshold of about 20 cm.

The crystal vaults are supported by two columns to the left and right of the entrance after a walk of about 3 metres. Walking further, we reach a stone staircase (5 steps) that leads to a ground-floor corridor located at a higher level in relation to the vestibule. Three passages in the form of sharp arches lead to it.

When on the corridor level, you enter through the passage located most to the right. At the corner, just after the stairs on the right, there is a schematic plan of the different floors on the wall. On the opposite wall of the corridor, we have a board indicating the location of the most important offices, hall and rooms according to the levels on which they are located.

When you enter the corridor level through the archway located most to the left, you find yourself at the corner of the corridor from which it is closest to the lift. The numbering of the individual rooms rises from this point, so further description will be carried out from here.

We turn to the left. Circling around the ground floor in this direction, to the right behind the windows, we have the spaces of the inner courtyards all the time. Wooden benches are located under the windows. The first door on the left is the men's restroom. The men's restroom takes up two rooms. In the first room after the entrance, we have two washbasins - one on the left and one on the right, with mirrors above them. Soap dispensers are located on the countertops, right next to the wash basins, hand dryers and paper towel dispensers on the walls at the sides of the wash basins. In the second room, there are two urinals on the left and two cubicles on the right.

After leaving the men's restroom, the next door is the service room. On the opposite side of the corridor, this is where the lift is located. Further along on the wall to the left is a shallow recess shaped like a window, without clearance - an internal window. At the end of this part of the corridor on the left in the corner is located the entrance door to the bistro.

Bistro

First, you pass through a large wooden double door; you then enter a small vestibule. After walking about 4 metres through another wooden double door, you enter the bistro. A high counter is located on the left. To place an order, head straight along the counter and to the left. In this line of the counter, parallel to the entrance door, there is a lowered countertop with a cash register. In the bistro space opposite the entrance, tables and chairs are arranged; to the right is a passage to another room with tables.

Corridor - cont.

After leaving the bistro, a corridor perpendicular to the previous one begins. Here, too, the entrance doors to the individual rooms will be arranged on the left-hand wall. The first door on the left is room 4 - described only by a number; the next one is the entrance to rooms five and 5a - these are the offices of the UJ Rector's representative for cooperation within Una Europa, his assistant and colleagues. Further on, we reach the aforementioned difference of levels within the ground floor - we are in front of the stairs. After climbing seven steps, we find ourselves at the level of the courtyard. The large wooden door on the right will take us into the courtyard, and the door on the left will direct us towards the exit to Dove Street.

We pass this lower level and re-enter the corridor level. On the left is the entrance to room 6 - Finance Department.

At the end of this part of the corridor, we reach a wooden door with glazing that leads to a small corridor with rooms on the left and opposite:

  • No. 7 - to the left of the corridor - Taxation Section,
  • No 8 and 8 a - opposite - Verification and Control Section.

To the right is a rather steep staircase leading upwards and into the cellars.

After exiting this section, we continue to the left, traversing another section of the corridor. On the left, we pass three recesses without clearance - internal windows - and reach the door of room number 10 of the IT Services Centre of the Jagiellonian University Information Technology Centre. Further on the left, we have a staircase down to the exit to Jagiellońska Street. On the right, a staircase down to the cloakroom level, exit to the courtyard and straight on to the exit through the main door.

However, when we stay in the corridor, we arrive at the door of room number 11 on the left - this is the Organisation Department and Lodgement of Documents Office. On either side of the door in the corridor, there are tables for the public to use to casually browse through the correspondence log relevant to their unit. Upon entering the Lodgement of Documents Office, the first section on the left and right is arranged with correspondence shelves with compartments for each unit. In the next section is the university mail reception point, a high countertop behind glass is located opposite the entrance, behind which the space of the room accommodates staff members of the department.

On exiting the Lodgement of Documents Office, further down the corridor, there is a ladies' restroom on the left, followed by a second ladies' restroom. The next door is a disabled-accessible restroom.

  • First ladies' restroom - occupies two rooms. In the first room after the entrance, we have two washbasins on the right and one washbasin on the left, with mirrors above them. Soap dispensers are located on the countertops, right next to the washbasins; hand dryers - are on two sides of the wall opposite the restroom door; paper towel dispensers are on the left and right on the wall on two sides of the entrance. There are two cubicles in the second room; the door to the cubicles is located on the right side.
  • The second ladies' restroom - also occupies two rooms. In the first room, we have a washbasin on the left, a mirror above it, a soap dispenser on the counter to the right of the washbasin, a paper towel dispenser and a hand dryer on the wall to the left of the washbasin. Opposite the door, a passage to a second room with cubicles situated to the right.
  • Accessible restroom - occupies one room. On the left of the entrance, there is a restroom bowl with handrails (transfer to the left side), and the restroom paper dispenser is on the wall to the left of the restroom. Opposite the door, we have a small washbasin with a mirror above it. The soap dispenser is located under the mirror, to the left of the washbasin. The towel dispenser and hand dryer - on the wall to the right of the washbasin.

As we pass the restrooms and continue straight ahead, we come to the end of this part of the corridor. Here, we have a small alcove on the left. To the left of the alcove is a door to an unmarked, locked room. Straight ahead is room number 14 - the Office of the Quaestor of the Jagiellonian University.

After leaving the alcove, we traverse another section of the corridor. The next four doors on the left - rooms numbered 15, 16, 17, and 18 - belong to the Legal Advisors' Team of the Jagiellonian University. The last, fifth door on this wall is the entrance to rooms 19a - the office of the Deputy Chancellor for General Affairs and 19b - the office of the Deputy Chancellor for General Affairs.

In order to be at our starting point, i.e. in front of the staircase leading to the upper floors of the Collegium Novum, and thus close the square shape around which we are building the description, all that remains is the last part of the corridor, which will also lead us to the stairs leading down to the vestibule with the gatehouse. On the wall to the left, we first encounter an interior window, then a door with glass leading to the basement, two more interior windows, and we find ourselves at the corner of the corridor where the previously mentioned information boards are arranged.

Moving on, on the left, we have a descent to a vestibule with a porter's lodge. On the right, a staircase leads to the cloakroom, to the exits to the courtyards and on to the opposite part of the hall. Then, beyond these stairs, a grand staircase leading upwards with a stone balustrade. When you pass these stairs and continue straight ahead, you will reach the lift on the right.

There is a connection in the building, a corridor crossing our schematic square, so to speak, a passage directly opposite the main entrance to the entrance from Jagiellońska Street (there are level differences along the way). When we head straight ahead from the main entrance, after walking about 7 metres, we reach five stone stairs with three arches. When we enter the middle arch, we are at the level of a corridor from which, continuing straight ahead, we will now descend seven steps to find ourselves in a lowered section where the cloakroom, ATM, exits to the courtyards on both sides of the passage are located. Passing these, we reach more steps (7), leading us back to the level of the higher corridor. After passing them, we are in a place where:

  • Opposite on the left is room 10, the room of the UJ Informatics Centre,
  • Straight ahead on the right is Room 11 - Application Journal, UJ Organisation Department,
  • Centrally opposite, further steps bring us to the level of the exit to Jagiellońska Street.

The description of the first floor will be led from the lift exit. As on the ground floor, moving along the corridor, we will go around the whole level, passing on the wall to the left, the doors to the individual rooms, and on the right: the windows overlooking the inner courtyards, with wooden benches underneath.

Assembly Hall

On the first floor of the Collegium Novum is located the most representative and largest hall in the building - the Assembly Hall - covering 250 square metres. It is here that the most important university events are held. It can accommodate 200 people.

The composition of the interior can be divided into the part exposed in the cathedral - the podium (to the left of the entrance) and the auditorium (opposite and to the right of the entrance).

It is possible to use a mobile ramp to reach the podium. The central seat on it is occupied by His Magnificence, the Rector's chair, with decorative pro-rector chairs below. Behind them are rows of Senate members' chairs. On the side below, under the windows facing the entrance, are arranged the dean's chairs. The auditorium is arranged in a theatre-like layout, with seats arranged in rows on one level.

The auditorium is decorated with a coffered ceiling with polychrome beams, the coats of arms of the university painted on the brackets and the coats of arms of Polish cities whose inhabitants supported the construction of the edifice with donations. The interior of the coffers is a strong blue. The walls of the auditorium are also kept in an intense colour - this is the so-called Pompeian pink (which can be described as a shade of red).

Above the cathedral are portraits of the university's founders: King Casimir the Great, Queen Jadwiga and King Władysław Jagiełło. The side wall, with the door, is decorated with paintings by Jan Matejko: "Copernicus in his atelier", "Self-portrait" and portraits of rectors from the late 19th century and early 20th century. On the back wall is Matejko's unfinished painting 'The Influence of the Jagiellonian University on Polish Science and Culture' and other portraits of the rectors.

To reach the Assembly Hall from the lift, head left. After walking about 5 metres on the right, a space of a small hall will open up. Walk through this hall, heading to the right. On the wall - exactly opposite the main staircase there are two entrances - these are heavy, wooden, solid, high doors. Between them is a plaque commemorating the professors deported to the Nazi concentration camps.

Corridor - cont.

When you head straight and slightly to the left from the lift, you reach the first door in this part of the corridor - this is the entrance to the men's restroom. The men's restroom occupies two rooms. In the first room, upon entering, we have two washbasins - one on the left and one on the right, with mirrors above them. Soap dispensers are located on the countertops, right next to the wash basins, hand dryers and paper towel dispensers on the walls at the sides of the wash basins. In the second room, there are two urinals on the left and two cubicles on the right.

The next door, opposite the lift, is the ladies' restroom. This restroom also occupies two rooms. In the first of these, upon entering, we have a row of three washbasins to the left, with a mirror above them. Soap dispensers are placed on the counter to the right of each washbasin. Hand dryers and paper towel dispensers are hung on the walls on the sides of the washbasins at a height of about 140 cm. The entrance to the second room is located on the right-hand side. The doors to the two cubicles are located opposite.

After leaving the ladies' room, the next door is the service room.

At the end of this part of the corridor on the left, you reach an alcove in which three doors are located:

  • Closed service room on the left,
  • Opposite the entrance to rooms 22 (the office of the building's administrator) and 22a Audiovisual Workshop,
  • On the right - room 23 - Office of the Plenipotentiaries of the Rector of the Jagiellonian University for strategic projects.

After leaving this alcove, we have another part of the corridor in front of us. The first door on the left is room 24 - the Philosophy Department room. The next door - 25 - remains undescribed. The next one is room 26 - the office of the Quaestor of the Jagiellonian University.

At the end of this part of the corridor, we reach a wooden door with glazing that leads into a small corridor where:

  • On the left is the door to the rooms of the Philology Department (27)
  • Opposite - doors to rooms of the Organisation Department (28)
  • On the right - a rather steep staircase leads upwards and to level 0 (to the part in the analogous small corridor level below, i.e. to the rooms of the Tax Section - 7 and the Verification and Control Section 8 and 8a).

After leaving this section, we continue to the left, traversing another section of the corridor. After walking about 10 metres, we reach the door to the Conference Room (no. 30).

Conference room 30

The conference room can accommodate 50 people. Upon entering, a lectern is located against the wall to the right, with rows of chairs arranged in front and to the left to the end of the room. This is the standard layout, but it can change - the room can be rearranged depending on the type of event taking place in it.

If you want to reach the Conference Room by stairs - head straight up all the way. The door to the Conference Room is opposite the stairs.

Corridor - cont.

The next door in this corridor on the left with the number 31 is the entrance to the rooms: University Council, University Spokesperson and UJ Rector's Secretary.

Further down the corridor, on the left is the men's restroom, then the women's restroom, and next door is the disabled restroom.

  • Men's restroom - occupies two rooms. In the first room after the entrance, we have two washbasins on the right and one washbasin on the left, with mirrors above them. Soap dispensers are located on the countertops on the right sides of the wash basins. Hand dryers and paper towel dispensers hang on the walls on two sides of the wash basins. In the second room, there are two cubicles (the doors to these are located on the right side) and three urinals located on the left side.
  • Ladies' restroom - also occupies two rooms. In the first room, we have a washbasin located in the corner on the left. Mirrors are on the walls above the washbasin. The soap dispenser is on the counter to the right of the washbasin. Dryer and paper towel dispenser - on the wall to the left of the washbasin. Opposite the door, we have a passage to a second room with two cubicles situated on the left side and a small washbasin placed in the corner on the right side of the room, just after entering it.
  • Accessible restroom - occupies one room. A washbasin is located on the left side, just after the entrance, with a mirror above it. A soap dispenser and hand dryer are located to the right of the washbasin. Further to the left from the entrance, there is a restroom bowl with handrails (transfer to the left side). The restroom paper dispenser is located on the wall to the right of the restroom.

As we pass the restrooms and continue straight ahead, we come to the end of this part of the corridor. In front of us are double glass doors that open manually, leading to the so-called Rector's Corridor. This houses the offices of the Vice-Chancellors and the Rector.

Rector's corridor

In the space of the corridor, to its right, between the windows, on a red ornamental carpet, are free-standing sculptures, formerly part of the Archaeological Museum's collection: a marble Leda with a swan and plaster casts of the Laocon group, the head of Zeus or the statue of Diana. Between the sculptures are decorative armchairs upholstered with red fabric.

On the opposite wall, where the doors to the individual pro-rector's offices are located, hang paintings: a copy of Jan Matejko's painting Wjazd Bolesław Chrobrego do Kijowa ('Bolesław the Brave Enters Kyiv) and Władysław Łuszczkiewicz's painting Jagiellonian University in the 15th century, as well as a plaster cast: a medallion - Medusa's head.

As you enter this corridor, at one end of the corridor on the left are the doors to rooms 32 - the office of the UJ Chancellor and 32a - the Office of the UJ Chancellor, 33 - the Office of the UJ Vice Chancellor for HR and Financial Policy and 33a - the office of the UJ Vice Chancellor for HR and Financial Policy.

The next door, opposite the entrance to the corridor, on the wall to the left, is the entrance to the rooms: 34 - the office of the Vice-Chancellor for Teaching, 35 - the Office of the UJ Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and the Office of the UJ Vice-Chancellor for Research, 36 - the office of the UJ Vice-Chancellor for Research. The next door leads to rooms 37 - office of the UJ Vice-Chancellor for Development, 37a - Office of the UJ Vice-Chancellor for Development and Office of the UJ Vice-Chancellor for International Cooperation, 38 - office of the UJ Vice-Chancellor for International Cooperation. Further to the left: doors leading to rooms 39, Office of the UJ Rector and 40 - office of the UJ Rector.

The door at the other end of the corridor, i.e. to the right of the entrance - room 41 - is the entrance to the vestibule and onto the Senate Room.

Senate Chamber

The Senate Hall is located between the Rector's office and the Assembly Hall, providing a direct passage between the two. A large table is situated in the centre of the room, with representative decorative chairs arranged around it. A row of chairs is also spread out against each wall. The hall is decorated with numerous portraits of prominent scholars.

Corridor - cont.

Before entering the vestibule and Senate Hall, a door is located on the right, which leads us out of the Rector's Corridor. We exit through it back into the main corridor of the building. We now make our way along the last short section of the corridor around the stairs to find ourselves again in front of the entrance to the Assembly Hall. Along the way, on the wall on the left, you pass two internal windows with no clearance. Then, on the left, you have an alcove where the entrance to the Auditorium is located, and on the right, the main staircase. To get back to the lift, pass the Hall and the staircase and continue straight ahead. The lift is located further down the corridor on the wall on the right.

The description of the first floor will be led from the lift exit. As on the ground floor, moving along the corridor, we will go around the whole level, passing on the wall on the left, the doors to the individual rooms and on the right: the windows overlooking the inner courtyards, with wooden benches underneath.

As you head straight and slightly to the left from the lift, you reach the first door in this part of the corridor - this is the entrance to the men's restroom.

  • Closed service room on the left,
  • Opposite the entrance to room number 43 - this is the Budgeting, Controlling and Analysis Department,
  • On the right - room 44 - is also home to the Budgeting, Controlling and Analysis Department.

After leaving this alcove, we have another part of the corridor in front of us. The first door on the left is room 45 - the Accounting Department. The next doors - 46, 47 and 48 - are the National Projects Settlement Department.

At the end of this part of the corridor, we reach a wooden door with glazing that leads into a small corridor where:

  • On the left is the door to the Accounting Department (49)
  • Opposite - doors to the following rooms of the Accounting Department (50, 50a, 51)
  • on the right, a rather steep staircase leads upwards and to level 1 (to a section in the corresponding small corridor below)

After exiting this section, we continue to the left, traversing another section of the corridor. After walking about 10 metres, we reach the door to the Nicolaus Copernicus Lecture Hall (no. 52).

Nicolaus Copernicus Lecture Hall (52)

This hall can accommodate 170 people. Upon entering, a lectern is located against the wall to the right, with rows of chairs arranged in front and to the left to the end of the room. This is a standard layout, but it can change - the room can be rearranged depending on the type of event that takes place in it. There are two entrances to the room. Another door in the corridor - opposite the staircase - is also the entrance to Room 52.

If you want to reach the lecture theatre by stairs - it is one flight away from the main entrance. You then head straight up all the way to the second floor - the door to the room is opposite the stairs.

Corridor - cont.

Further down the corridor, to the left, are a ladies' restroom and a disabled-accessible restroom, which is not marked.

  • Ladies' restroom - occupies two rooms. In the first room, we have a washbasin located in the corner on the left. Mirrors are on the walls above the washbasin. The soap dispenser is on the counter to the right of the washbasin. Dryer and paper towel dispenser - on the wall to the left of the washbasin. Opposite the door, we have a passage to a second room with two cubicles located on the left side and a small washbasin placed in the corner on the right side of the room, just after entering it.
  • Accessible restroom - occupies one room. On the wall opposite the entrance, closer to the corner on the left, there is a restroom bowl with handrails (transfer to the left side), and a restroom paper dispenser is located on the wall on the left side of the restroom. A washbasin is located on the wall opposite the door, with a mirror above it. The soap dispenser is on the left of the washbasin, and the paper towel dispenser is on the right.

As we pass the restrooms and continue straight ahead, we come to the end of this part of the corridor. Here, we have a small alcove on the left. To the left of the alcove is a door to an unmarked, locked room. Straight ahead is room 55 - the offices of the History Department.

After leaving the alcove, we traverse the next section of the corridor. The first door on the left is Jozef Szujski Lecture Room No. 56, which can accommodate 50 people and is used for regularly scheduled academic classes. It was in this room that the arrest of Jagiellonian University professors by the German occupiers - the Sonderaktion Krakau - took place on 6 November 1939.

The next door - rooms 57, 58, and 59 - are the rooms of the Faculty of Law and Administration.

This part of the corridor ends. We turn right, and there is the last section in front of us, leading us to the main staircase. As we go straight ahead, we pass a glass door on our left, which leads to a small vestibule. To the left of the vestibule and across from the entrance are further rooms of the Faculty of Law and Administration - 60 and 61. To the right is the internal staircase - a rather steep staircase leading up and down.

When you leave the vestibule and continue straight ahead, you will have an alcove on your left - the so-called hall above the Hall - and on your right, the main staircase leading to the lower levels.

To get back to the lift, pass the hall above the Hall, and the stairs continue straight ahead. The lift is located further down the corridor on the wall on the right.

Between the floors within the primary, representative staircase are landings - these are rectangular mezzanines with two columns at the centres. On their walls are commemorative plaques. On the higher landing (between floors 1 and 2) - to the right as you come from below - are three display cases of the Jagiellonian University Publishing House promoting its publications.

  • The Collegium Novum is a historic building.
  • Some difficulties regarding movement within the building should be expected. There are level differences on the ground floor.
  • On the ground floor, there is an evacuation chair for people with disabilities next to the cloakroom.

The Collegium Novum is located in zone A of restricted car traffic, which makes it difficult to access the building directly by car. If you are entitled to park in such a zone, you can park on Gołębia or Wiślna Street. When you do not have such an entitlement, the best solution is to park on, e.g. Smoleńsk, Marszałka J. Piłsudskiego, Jabłonowskich or Kapucyńska Streets.

There are no designated parking spaces for people with disabilities in the immediate vicinity of the building.

The nearest such sites (3) are on Jablonowskich Street, approximately 300 metres from the Collegium Novum.

There are several tram and bus stops in close proximity to Collegium Novum:

  • The Filharmonia stop is approximately 400 metres away; tram lines: 1, 2, 6, 8, 13, 18;
  • The Bagatela Theatre stop is approximately 350 metres away; tram lines 2, 4, 8, 13, 14, 18, 20, 24; bus lines 124, 152, 424, 502.
